Who we are and what we do.
The mission and goal of this Foundation is to provide compassionate and financial assistance for those seeking counseling and struggling with substance abuse, addiction, and/or other mental health issues. We want to be the stepping stone to get those in need of assistance on the road to recovery.
The Mikel Fruits Reach Out for Help Foundation is a 501(c) (3) Public Charity, formed in honor of my son. Mikel committed suicide on August 10th, 2011, while under the influence of prescription drugs (which were not prescribed) and alcohol. He was 26 years old.
Most all of us have been touched by this demon called addiction in one way or another. Whether it is a family member, friend, or co-worker, all lives are affected. The ripple effect moves further outward destroying many lives in the process. More and more often, we learn of a death due to overdosing or suicide. These precious lives are worth saving. The negative stigma that goes along with addiction and mental health issues must be eliminated through education and awareness. We hope to be a part of changing this.
Not a day goes by that I don’t think of Mikel, and wonder how life may have turned out for him, had he known where to turn to reach out for help.

Remembering Mikel
Mikel could light up a room with his presence. His wit, his charm, and his sparkling brown eyes are just a few of the obvious qualities that made him the special young man that he was. He loved his family. He loved parties and having a good time. He loved music, writing, sports (especially Colts football), children and animals. He showed kindness and compassion to the elderly, disabled and the “outcasts”. He had a heart of gold.
Mikel had dreams of making it big someday. He wanted to make a name for himself and wanted people to remember him for something positive. I know he would not want us to remember him for the way he died. He would want us to remember the good times spent with him and to think of him with a smile and a warm heart.
Helping others in his name is one way we can honor Mikel and realize that dream. The gift of a second chance of having a happy, healthy, and fulfilling life is possible through this Foundation. Knowing that, because of him, someone may be able to change his or her life for the better undoubtedly puts a smile on his face. I know he is proud of what we are accomplishing, and his beautiful spirit is working right alongside us.
His death has left a hole in the hearts of his family and friends. We miss his sweet smile and laughter, and are thankful for the short time we were blessed to have him with us.
